Xur’s Wares: March 10, 2017

A look at what the Agent of the Nine is selling this week.

Greetings Guardians!

Welcome back to “Xur’s Wares.” In this weekly series I take a look at what that ol’ Agent of the Nine is selling and give you my opinion on what he’s got.

This week you can find Xur in the Reef. He’s only got one hiding spot out here and it’s easy to get to. After you spawn in, to your right past Berg 99-40 (the Bounty Tracker), down the steps, across the catwalk, and then turn right. Xur will be in a cubbyhole on the left a little ways down. He’s selling: Empyrean Bellicose, Knucklehead Radar, Nothing Manacles, and Truth. Additionally, he’s got the usual non-rotating stock of curios, heavy ammo, exotic shards, glass needles and the like. Find out more about them here. Okay, let’s get started!

Empyrean Bellicose

This Titan helm has an exotic perk that is similar to the Warlock’s “Angel of light” perk, namely "Aiming weapons while in the air will hold you in place for a short time.” Enemies on the other side of a rock? Jump and aim. Want to get above your teammates to headshot the boss? Jump and aim. Just want to check out the view? Jump and aim. Where this helmet really soars (yuk yuk) is when the “Airborne" modifier is in place. This modifier gives a damage boost when your guardian is in the air.

It’s important to note that you don’t need to SHOOT from the air, you just need to be in the air when the damage impacts. So throw your grenade, then “jump and aim” before it lands to take advantage of the bonus. Personally, I like to pair this helm with the Dragon’s Breath rocket launcher. The napalm deals an area of effect that continues to damage enemies, so you can jump and aim while they burn to death. In PVP I’ve heard of people using the helmet to hide above doorways. Let an enemy chase you, jump and aim, then when they go past, drop and dispatch.

Knucklehead Radar

A Hunter helmet, its perk allows “your radar to remain visible when aiming primary weapons.” This is SO helpful, especially if you like ADSing (aiming down sights) like I do. But in the Rise of Iron, the game introduced the Memory of Gheleon artifact, which has this same bonus. No only that, but the artifact provides a more detailed tracker, and can be used by all three classes. So if you don’t have Gheleon, or are trying to collect all the exotics for the Age of Triumph its worth getting.

Nothing Manacles

These Warlock gauntlets are the jam! Their exotic perk “enables Scatter Grenade tracking and gain an additional Scatter Grenade” is crazy fun in both PVP and PVE. If you ever see the modifiers “Void burn” and “Catapult” together, run - don’t walk, to your vault and get these. If you set up your perk tree to maximize “Energy drain” then you’ll grenade, melee, and nova bomb your way to glory. I’ve had Challenge of the Elders matches where I basically spammed grenades the entire time. Keep in mind these grenades act different than the Axion Bolt of fusion grenades, they don’t “snap to” the bad buys. So in both PVP and PVE make sure to throw them near the feet of your target. They will bounce up, follow, and destroy.

Who's fast, tracks, and detonates in proximity? This guuuuuy. *Points at self with thumbs, then realizes self is not this rocket launcher* For a long time, Truth has been my go-to rocket launcher for Iron Banner. You can fire in the direction of enemies and get them with the proximity detonation. If you find the right group of bad guys this can often result in multikills. The tracking is very, very strong as well. If you’re able to get a lock on, it’s game over. The rockets go so fast, and can turn so sharply that it’s almost impossible to escape from them. Truth isn’t used too much in in PVE, but if there’s a Void Burn active, it could be a great option. Especially for the purple-shielded Captains.

And that’s it for this week! The pieces of armor can be had for 13 strange coins while the gun will set you back 17. Happy hunting, Guardians!
