Skylanders SuperChargers: Introducing Racing and Online Multiplayer

Take on your friends in online or splitscreen multiplayer.

In Skylanders SuperChargers, you can battle your way through Skylands on foot or by piloting more than 15 new land, air, and sea vehicles. However, that got us thinking—it’d be an awful waste to not let players engage in a little friendly, high-speed competition. That’s why this week at Gamescom, we’re excited to share the news that racing is coming to Skylanders SuperChargers.

Racing lets players go head-to-head in either two-player local multiplayer or, for the first time ever, four-player online competitive match ups. But you won’t just be competing for first place, you’ll be battling it out with each SuperChargers vehicle’s unique weapons and abilities, power-ups, boosts, hazards, and more. There are six race tracks available with Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs, two for each terrain type: land, sea, and sky. Each track has multiple pathways and routes to explore to get the edge on the competition. What’s more, each vehicle type has its own special maneuver—land vehicles can drift to gain a quick boost of speed, sea vehicles can dive to reach underwater pathways, and sky vehicles can barrel roll to evade other racers.

The vehicle you choose will also determine the attacks at your disposal. For example, if you’re piloting Dive Bomber, a sea vehicle, you’ll be able to use a sonar ping ability to lock onto other racers and then use your primary attack to fire torpedoes. On the other hand, the land vehicle Shark Tank can fire missiles at nearby racers or use its street swimming mode to dive under the ground and avoid fire. As you wear down a vehicle’s health, it’ll spin out of control before regenerating, giving you an opportunity to take the lead. Players can also keep an eye out for power-ups and health along the track to stay in the action. Power ups afford a brief window of opportunity to catch up to the competition with a speed boost, defend against incoming attacks with a shield, and more. By completing races, you can also earn gearbits, wishstones, and other rewards.

If, however, you prefer to test your skills as a driver, you can try out the time trial mode, where you compete with friends and friends of friends for the best time via online leaderboards. There are also SuperCharger Challenges, which offer racing-based challenges that can be played whenever you pair together SuperChargers with their signature vehicles. Challenges can be accessed from the Skylander Academy game hub and yield special bonuses.

The racing experience will also expand with the three planned Skylanders SuperChargers Racing Action Packs, one for each terrain type. Each Racing Action Pack will introduce two additional tracks for a specific terrain type and a super villain boss to race, defeat, and unlock. Across all three packs, you’ll have a chance to face 12 villains, such as Chompy Mage, Golden Queen, and Wolfgang. After besting a villain, players will gain access to their signature vehicle and attacks. Along with the in-game content, Racing Action Packs will include three toys: a SuperCharger, its signature vehicle, and a villain trophy, which unlocks two new tracks and new modes, like SuperVillain Cup, Boss Pursuit, and Mirror Cup.

For Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS, there’s also a complementary version of Skylanders SuperChargers that gives fans the combat racing experience. Skylanders SuperChargers Racing for Wii and 3DS offers all-new tracks, augmented with power-ups, boosts, hazards, and more for up to 50 different gameplay experiences. The 3DS version allows for four-player local and online multiplayer, while fans on the Wii can go head-to-head in two-player local splitscreen multiplayer.
