The Autobots roll out in the latest trailer

In a lot ways, TRANSFORMERS: Devastation is the game that long-time fans have spent 30 years waiting for. Sure, gamers have seen many outstanding TRANSFORMERS titles over the past three decades, but this action-brawler manages to balance the franchise’s rich history with modern gameplay and visuals. It hits all the nostalgic high notes without relying on pure sentimentality. You’ll quickly remember why you loved TRANFORMERS in the first place, and then you’ll realize that you never stopped.

Don’t believe me? Check out the launch trailer.

TRANSFORMERS: Devastation is the brainchild of PlatinumGames, a Japanese developer renowned for its slick visuals and free-flowing, high-speed combat. The folks at Platinum have created a deep combat system that will continue to challenge players long after the final boss battle. After all, learning how to craft that perfect combo and unleash it at the ideal time is a skill that only the most seasoned AUTOBOT can master.

You’ll take control of Grimlock, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, or Optimus Prime in a head-to-head battle with an army of invading DECEPTICONS. Each AUTOBOT has a unique fighting style, so select your character carefully. Bumblebee, for example, doesn’t deal as much damage as Grimlock, but he makes up for that lack of power with speed. And as you discover new weapons and learn your personal combat style, you can customize the character to fit your needs.

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about TRANSFORMERS: Devastation, but the cel-shaded artwork and deep combat system are right at the top of the list. Plus, the fact that many of the franchise’s original voice actors are reprising their iconic roles is enough to make any super-fan giggle like an over-caffeinated toddler. And aside from the game’s single-player campaign, you’ll get your hands on 50 challenging bonus missions and more than 150 upgradable weapons.

But the biggest reason to be excited about TRANSFORMERS: Devastation might be the fact that it’s out today. The game is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Steam.
