TRANSFORMERS: Devastation Announced, Launching This Fall

PlatinumGames debuts new cel-shaded brawler.

Since its introduction in the mid-80s, the TRANSFORMERS franchise has been continuously evolving, and the fans have happily come along for the ride. But this week, Activision and PlatinumGames announced TRANSFORMERS: Devastation, a completely new direction for the TRANSFORMERS franchise that's guaranteed to give the fanbase flashbacks. At its core, TRANSFORMERS: Devastation is a third-person action-brawler that gives players the ability to shift between vehicle and robot forms during combat. So, if you're in the mood for an iron-fisted rumble, your AUTOBOT robot mode should fit the bill nicely. But when you need to race across the city to perform a few hit-and-run maneuvers, vehicle mode is just a button-touch away.

Or—and this is my favorite part—you can dynamically switch between modes to perform a seemingly endless stream of robot/vehicle combo maneuvers, reducing the DECEPTICON army to a pile of smoldering metal. It wouldn’t be a TRANSFORMERS game without OPTIMUS PRIME, and Peter Cullen is once again lending his iconic voice to the character. SIDESWIPE, BUMBLEBEE, WHEELJACK, and GRIMLOCK are also playable, and each character has a unique set of maneuvers and combos.

Long-time fans will recognize Frank Welker’s voice, as he steps back into the roles of MEGATRON and SOUNDWAVE, characters that he’s been voicing for nearly 30 years. Plus, Dan Gilvezan will return to play BUMBLEBEE, a character he hasn't voiced since 1987. That’s right. BUMBLEBEE will speak.

TRANSFORMERS: Devastation's art will undoubtedly be an exciting element for long-time fans. The folks at PlatinumGames have drawn inspiration from the original character designs and the IDW comic book universe. And they’ve mixed in some old-school anime, packaging everything in a colorful, cel-shaded aesthetic.

PlatinumGames has managed to find the perfect balance between hard-hitting action and light-hearted visuals. It’s everything you’d expect from the company behind Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 mixed with everything you’ve always wanted from a TRANSFORMERS title.

TRANSFORMERS: Devastation will crash land on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 PlayStation 3, and PC this fall. Don’t forget to follow @Activision on Twitter for more updates.
