Getting Started With the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta

Familiarize with the new movement system, Specialists, and more.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta kicks off on Wednesday, August 19 on PlayStation 4, but before you load up and jump online, we wanted to share a few helpful tips to get you started, including an introduction to the new movement mechanics, how to pick the right Specialist, and more.

Get to Know the New Movement System

With Black Ops 3, the team at Treyarch has introduced a new movement system that allows players to traverse environments fluidly and keep combat constantly in focus. It consists of several new movement mechanics: unlimited sprint, thrust jump, power slides, wall running, and swimming.

For veteran Call of Duty players, unlimited sprint is sure to be the most immediately recognizable change. Rather than brief bursts of speed, the pace is always high—allowing for quick, decisive movement through the map and into (or out of) engagements.

Black Ops 3 also introduces the thrust jump, allowing you to use controlled thruster-assisted jumps to reach elevated vantages, clear gaps, and catch your opponents off guard. Thrust jumps can be engaged by double tapping the jump button and holding it down or using several successive taps, providing one long boost or short bursts of thrust. While in the air, you can also use thrust to strafe to the left or the right by tapping the jump button and pointing your thumbstick to the left or right.

Thrust jumps can also be used to launch into a wall run. Just run towards a wall and engage a thrust jump to latch onto it. Wall runs offer fast map traversal and new strategic pathways, all the while letting players maintain full control of their weapon, including the ability to aim down sights, throw grenades, and more. Be careful, however, as wall runs leave you without cover and vulnerable to enemy fire.

While moving through a map or coming down from a thrust jump, you can also engage a power slide by holding the crouch button. Power slides let you quickly maneuver into an objective position or while flanking unsuspecting enemies around corners.

In certain maps, you can also use bodies of water as alternate pathways, sneak by enemies, and reach objectives. While swimming, you can move in any direction, fire your weapon, and use your thrust jump to quickly surface.

Specialists: Finding the Perfect Match

Specialists are elite soldiers with their own distinctive personality, voice, and backstory within the Black Ops 3 universe and add a completely new gameplay dynamic to multiplayer with the introduction of Specialist weapons and abilities.

Before a match begins, you’ll have a chance to pick a Specialist and either their associated ability or weapon for the length of the match—so choose carefully. Specialist abilities offer unique tactical advantages, like a brief surge in speed or the ability to warp back to a previous location. Specialist weapons, on the other hand, provide an additional offensive weapon, such as an explosive bow or a minigun. Specialist abilities and weapons are earned through a combination of time and score, but they only last for a short duration, so you’ll want to give extra consideration when and how to use them.

When you first fire up the beta, you’ll be able to choose from four Specialists characters to start, but as you rank up, you’ll gain access to an additional four.  Initially, you’ll want to get a feel for each Specialist’s weapon and ability and find the best for your play style. However, as you familiarize, consider how each Specialist’s ability or weapon can benefit the map and mode of the match ahead. For instance, in Domination, Ruin’s Gravity Spikes can be critical for clearing out an occupied objective. Or, perhaps you’re about to play Search and Destroy—consider Outrider’s Vision Pulse, which reveals the location of enemies in the surrounding area for a brief time.

Make Your Weapon Your Own

In Black Ops 3 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, players will have unprecedented control over the design and performance of their weapons through new and expanded tools, like Gunsmith, the Weapon Paint Shop, and Pick 10. During the multiplayer beta, fans will get a small taste of weapon customization in Black Ops 3.

Lets start with Weapon Paint Shop. Building upon the Emblem Editor introduced in Black Ops 2, the Weapon Paint Shop allows you to create custom graphics for your weapon. With support for up to 64 layers per side and three sides of a weapon to personalize, Weapon Paint Jobs allow you to make your weapon truly one-of-a-kind.
