In a lot of ways, Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime. Sure, he’s not technically from an ancient race of alien robots, but his voice is practically inseparable from the character. Cullen has been voicing the Autobot leader since 1984, a role that’s spanned movies, television, and video games. And he’s once again lending those iconic pipes to Transformers: Devastation.
Mr. Cullen was kind enough to sit down with us and chat about his work with the Transformers franchise and his inspiration for the character. Check it out:
For fans, Transformers: Devastation is a chance to connect (or reconnect) with the franchise’s roots. But for Cullen, this project carries a lot of personal weight. After playing Optimus Prime for more than three decades, Transformers: Devastation allowed Cullen to take a few steps back and appreciate the positive impact that the character has had.
“Doing Transformers: Devastation right now, it’s an opportunity to remind myself [about] the original, and all the qualities that were written for Optimus Prime back in those days. I’m very grateful to the authors that gave a super hero the qualities of leadership and reliability, and be able to instill that into the hearts and minds of kids for so long.”
Transformers: Devastation will crash land on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 6th. If you’d like to pre-order your very own copy, head over to the official Transformers: Devastation website. And don’t forget to follow Transformers: Devastation on Facebook and Activision on Twitter.
