Bungie Talks Destiny: Rise of Iron, The Return of the Gjallarhorn, and More

Learn more about the new expansion for Destiny launching September 20.

On September 20, Bungie and Activision will launch Destiny: Rise of Iron—a large new expansion to the Destiny universe that introduces a new story, new enemies, new activities, new gear, new destinations, and more. Fans got a first-look during a special live broadcast from Bungie last week, but now, with E3 2016 kicking off in Los Angeles, the development team will be talking more about Destiny: Rise of Iron and what to expect this September. To learn more, we sat down with Bungie Community Manager David “DeeJ” Dague.

What can you tell us about the story of Destiny: Rise of Iron?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: Rise of Iron is the next adventure in the world of Destiny. All Guardians have been called to follow in the footsteps of the Iron Lords and confront an ancient threat they sacrificed themselves to contain. We’re telling a new story in Destiny that will send players to a zone they have yet to explore. Once again, they’ll summon their bravery to defeat their enemies, claim new rewards, and become legend.

With so much history and lore in the Destiny universe, what drew the team to the story of the Iron Lords?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: Expansions to Destiny are a great opportunity for us to elaborate on the things that players love most about the game. In this case, we’re telling the backstory for Lord Saladin and his order of elite heroes. We only know of legends like Jolder and Felwinter through the weapons that bear their name. In Rise of Iron, we have a chance to learn the fate of the Iron Lords, and honor that sacrifice by destroying their mortal enemies once and for all.

Rise of Iron will also introduce new environments for players to explore. What can you tell us?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: We have expanded the boundaries of the Earth destination with a new landing zone that will send players into The Plaguelands. This mysterious territory has been forbidden for centuries. With the return of a technological plague known to the Iron Lords as SIVA, an incursion by the Guardians is humanity’s best hope for survival. Beyond the Cosmodrome, players will find a landscape transformed by a new enemy.

What new activities will fans get to take part in?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: Rise of Iron will deliver everything that players of Destiny love – new Story Missions, a new Strike, new Crucible action, and a new Raid. There will be public events that have Guardians fighting together in new and exciting ways. They’ll also have the chance to honor the memory of the Iron Lords and earn rewards with new rituals that will drive their endgame progression.

Can you share any early clues about Rise of Iron’s new six-player Raid?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: Under penalty of certain death at the hands of the Raid Designers, I cannot. Raids are mysteries to be solved by the players. “Going in blind,” as they say, and discovering the solutions to the action-packed puzzles we’ve created for them is a huge part of the experience. As always, the Raid is an experience that will send a Fireteam into an enemy stronghold to dismantle an enemy’s power once and for all.

What was the motivation behind making Destiny: Rise of Iron only available on current-gen platforms?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: This was an inevitable fork in the road. With all of our content updates to Destiny, the world of the game has become a big place. We’ve reached a point where we would have to start subtracting from the player experience on the legacy consoles to add new content. Instead, we’ve chosen to leave the game intact on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and work on paths for upgrades and account conversions.

Destiny: Rise of Iron also marks the return of the Gjallarhorn—how can we get one?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: You know it! Every player of Rise of Iron will have to chance to truly earn a Gjallarhorn, rather than hope for it decrypt from an Exotic Engram. A new Quest will have Guardians forging their own weapon from the shards of lost relics. And, if you pre-order, you’ll also acquire a limited edition variant in black. It’s a weapon fit for an Iron Lord. It made sense to return it to power.

When can fans expect to learn more about Rise of Iron?

David ‘DeeJ’ Dague: This conversation will last all summer long, with many stops along the road to launch. Stay tuned because there are many more stories to tell before it’s time to return to the Wall.
